Inlays and Onlays

Our teeth are very tough. They were made that way so they can withstand the constant wear and tear. But that’s not all. Our teeth are also under constant attack from the bacteria in your mouth.

But regardless of how tough the teeth are and regardless of how well you brush and floss your teeth, they are still susceptible to damage. That’s why here at Ashley Family Dental, we offer many different solutions to all kinds of dental problems, and inlays and onlays are among them.

Inlays and Onlays

Inlays and onlays are best described as partial crowns. When you have severe damage to your tooth, sometimes the best recourse is to cover it fully with a crown. When the damage to the tooth is not that great, then our inlays and onlays may be better alternatives.

We put the inlay if it is possible to place it right on the tooth and if the cusps are not damaged at all. If using an inlay is not possible, then an onlay may be used instead.

Why Do You Need Inlays and Onlays?

If you have damaged teeth, an inlay or onlay can get your tooth back into its former shape. It keeps the tooth strong and protect it from further damage. Since it’s just a partial crown, it’s not as expensive as getting a full crown for your teeth, and it also doesn’t take as long to put it over your teeth.

With the use of inlays and onlays, your teeth will look a lot better. With these dental solutions you can smile with greater confidence since the decayed parts of your teeth will be replaced by the partial crown. Our inlays and onlays look natural too, so no one will notice them when you open your mouth to speak.

What’s more, these things will help you chew your food properly. The inlay and onlay restores the tooth to its proper shape, so you can use the tooth more effectively when you eat.

What to Expect

The first thing we will do when you visit our clinic is check the state of your teeth. We look for signs of damage and we determine the severity of the damage. For some types of damage, we can recommend an inlay or an onlay instead of a full crown to cover your tooth. We will then discuss the material we will use for the inlay or onlay so you can decide which one to pick.

Then we begin the process by removing all the decayed parts of your tooth. After this step is completed, we will create a mold of your teeth. Your first visit to our dental clinic will end when we finish putting on a temporary partial crown on your teeth.

We will then take the mold into the lab where we will create the inlay or onlay. The mold will helps ensure that the partial crown will fit on your tooth perfectly. The material we use for the inlay or onlay can either be porcelain, composite resin, or gold. Each one has its benefits. Creating the inlay or onlay will take about 2 to 3 weeks.

On your second visit, we will remove the temporary inlay and put on the permanent inlay. Then we secure the inlay on the tooth with the use of dental cement.
