It has been about 50 years since tooth-colored fillings were first introduced and the dental industry has made great strides in improving them. At Ashley Family Dental, we’ve taken advantage of all these innovations so we can offer only the most natural-looking, the most effective, and the safest tooth-colored fillings for our patients.
What Are Fillings For?
Sometimes we have patients who don’t brush or floss their teeth properly and/or regularly. Others don’t get their teeth professionally cleaned every 6 months. And there are those who also have cavities in their teeth despite their good oral hygiene.
For these situations, we recommend fillings. Fillings cover up the cavities so that the germs can’t get inside the tooth. We can even use fillings to restore teeth that have decayed or chipped. The filling material is very malleable, which allows us to shape it to make the teeth look natural. Finally, fillings cover up the cavities, which is great because these things don’t exactly look appealing to the people you meet and talk to.
Options for Filling Material
You can opt for natural looking tooth-colored fillings so that no one will notice you have them. Your other option is to use silver (amalgam) fillings, which are usually more affordable. In addition, silver fillings tend to last longer, as they’re very durable and less susceptible to wear and tear.
But you may not want to use silver fillings because you’re concerned about the mercury found in this material. And of course, the main problem with silver fillings is that people can’t help but notice them when you open your mouth to speak. Silver is very distracting, and many don’t find it all that attractive to look at.
Besides, you don’t really want people to know you have fillings in your teeth. They might think you don’t really care much about hygiene at all, and that’s not a good impression to make when you’re at a party or on a date.
But with tooth-colored fillings, we can make sure that the color matches your teeth so no one notices that the fillings are there.
We recommend tooth-colored fillings for other reasons besides looking natural. Another advantage is that fillings create a chemical bond with your tooth structure. There’s no need to mechanically support the presence of the fillings, so there’s no need for us to put in slots, grooves, or pins in your teeth.
Putting in these tooth-colored fillings also doesn’t take up too much time. Once it has covered your cavities, it only takes a few moments for it to harden. So when you leave our clinic, you can already eat hard foods without worrying that you’ll damage your fillings.
We can always just repair your fillings when you come in for your regular visits. We will always check the condition of your fillings during your checkups.
